
The main reason was money problems that kept getting worse over time. Fuel prices went up a lot, which hit low-cost airlines especially hard. Spirit also had billions in debt from earlier restructuring efforts. Two bankruptcy filings in a short period made recovery very difficult. A proposed government rescue deal of about $500 million failed to get approval. Without that support, the airline could not stay afloat. So shutting down became the only option left.
