May Day and Labor Day both celebrate workers, but they are observed on different dates and have different histories. May Day is held on May 1 and is recognized globally as International Workers’ Day. It is closely tied to labor protests and the fight for workers’ rights in the 1800s. Labor Day in the United States and Canada, on the other hand, takes place in September. It was created partly to avoid the political associations of May Day. Labor Day is usually more about relaxing, barbecues, and the end of summer. So while both honor workers, May Day is more focused on activism and history.
