May Day, celebrated on May 1st, is known around the world as International Workers’ Day. It honors the achievements and struggles of workers and the labor movement. The date was chosen in the late 1800s to remember protests for better working conditions, especially the push for an eight-hour workday. One key event linked to it is the Haymarket Affair in Chicago in 1886. Over time, many countries adopted May 1 as a public holiday to recognize workers’ rights. At the same time, the day also has older roots as a spring festival in Europe. So today, May Day mixes both labor history and seasonal celebration traditions.
