Alaska has a unique history that includes Native cultures, Russian settlement, and American expansion. It was originally inhabited by indigenous peoples for thousands of years. In the 1700s, Russia claimed the territory and used it for trade, especially fur. The United States purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867 in a deal often called “Seward’s Folly.” At first, many people thought it was a bad deal, but it later proved valuable. Gold was discovered in the late 1800s, leading to major gold rushes. Alaska became a U.S. state in 1959. It also played a role in World War II due to its strategic location. Today, its history is an important part of its identity and culture.
